Story Time! My Workplace Fraud Experience

Story time!

Let me tell you about my experiences with employees committing fraud!

So, you guys may have seen this headline where some Seprod employees were accused of setting up this elaborate scheme to defraud the company of over $160 million.

And funny thing, I was just telling somebody last week about a similar situation at a previous workplace of mine that happened years ago. As a matter of fact, I can think of two examples of people finding innovative ways to steal.

So, in this situation, these Seprod employees basically took the merchandise from the company and were selling it off on their own.  So, they stole merchandise and found an elaborate way to trick the system and just sold it.

I used to work at a company that provided meals for employees. At one point, it was free and later became subsidized. They had a kitchen on the grounds of the property and they had a chef. But people started realizing the portions were smaller than usual, and the chef was running out of certain foods constantly. Well, it turned out that the chef was stealing the supplies and running his own cook shop right down the road. Yup, people find ways to steal!

So someone eventually told one of the managers that they saw the chef selling food at the restaurant down the road. They set up an internal sting operation and they caught him leaving the compound with chickens under his clothes. They caught him Chicken Handed!

So it’s literally the same thing that happened at Seprod on a smaller scale at this company.

I remember another experience where they had to fire the accountant because he was making out false invoices using the names of the employees. These invoices would say that the employees were making a claim for reimbursement and then putting his account number on the invoices so that the money goes directly to his account. The employees whose names he used never even knew the invoices existed.

So, he was eventually caught and of course fired. I don’t know if he was charged or what eventually became of that incident.

I’m definitely interested in hearing your stories of fraud, because I feel like most people have experienced it in some way!
