Is your light bill going up?
If you pay a light bill in Jamaica, get ready for potential changes in your electricity bill!
Jamaica’s primary electricity distributor, Jamaica Public Service (JPS), is once again considering adjustments to their pricing strategy.
The US Billion dollar company is gearing up to submit a proposal to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR), to review their rates at the start of the new Tariff period.
These reviews occur every five years. The upcoming period is for 2024-2029.
This process typically involves a reassessment of rates, potentially leading to adjustments that could impact your bill.
Now JPS has several reasons for wanting to review their rates, but a key focus this time around is to address theft and energy losses.
According to JPS, they want to make sure that the good customers who follow the rules aren’t unfairly affected by a small group causing trouble by teefing light.
But, the fact that these problems keep coming back makes you wonder if the company is really making any headway. How much more will it cost good customers to suffer for the delinquents?
Even though JPS is getting ready to tweak their rates, they’ve been pretty hush-hush about exactly how they plan to do it. But, they did drop a hint about moving towards greener and more energy-efficient solutions.
They mentioned that they want customers to have the freedom to pick the type of energy they use from the grid, whenever they need it, and for whatever reason.
This means that they might roll out more renewable energy choices, flexible pricing packages, and even more smart grid tech options for customers
These initiatives could give customers more say in how they use and manage their energy consumption. But of course it’s gonna cost you.
And that’s the bottom line.
