Guyanese Adults to Receive $100K Grant

Every Guyanese citizen over 18 is eligible for a one-time GUY$100,000 from the government, according to President Irfaan Ali’s latest update.

The update comes after the President’s initial announcement of GUY$200,000 per household was met with backlash concerning how a household would be defined.

According to the Government, every person who is 18 and older as of January 1, 2024, holds a valid passport or Guyanese ID is eligible for the funds.

Speaking on Taking Stock, Personal Finance and Business Analyst,Youni Abdul said the overall sentiment in the country is good right now following the updated announcement.

“Social media is abuzz with people talking about how they’re going to spend the money.

Despite widespread excitement, there are ongoing discussions about eligibility concerns, including overseas citizens and the impact on migrant populations, like the influx from Venezuela. The cutoff date of January 1, 2024, also leaves out those turning 18 later this year, causing some dissatisfaction.

Additionally, not everyone sees this grant as a perfect solution.

“I’m not too in favor of a universal basic income policy. It’s not my preferred style, but it seems to be the direction taken,” Abdul added.

Implementing the grant smoothly while addressing emerging concerns will be crucial for long-term success.
