To mark 15 years in Jamaica, Huawei has opened its new 9000 square foot headquarters at 97 Hope Road Kingston.

According to CEO of Carrier Network Business Group, Huawei Jamaica, Neil Grant, the $300 million investment is yet another signal of the company’s commitment to Jamaica.

“What this says is that we’re here for the long term and we look forward to serving the people and our customers with the best of technologies,” he said.

Grant said that space will house the administrative, human resource, research and development and tech departments as well as meeting rooms and a restaurant.

“The new facility will allow Huawei to further its growth in Jamaica,” he said.

Huawei first came to Jamaica in 2007 as a partner to telecommunications provider Claro and since then has been part of the digital development of Jamaica. From the development of robust and innovative technological infrastructure such as wireless and fibre to the home networks, and digital TV services to the growth and penetration of smartphones while always maintaining the highest cyber security standards.

“Huawei believes in Jamaica,” Grant said.

“As we continue to grow locally so does our investment. Our team comprises over 80% Jamaicans and we are proud of the accomplishments of our Jamaican outfit,” he added.

The company has also implemented several social responsibility programmes that promote the development of students from the main universities in the country.

Since 2017, Huawei Seeds for the Future has provided technological and cultural learning opportunities with experts in China to 67 young Jamaican nationals.

It has also helped to promote the exchange of ICT knowledge and greater interest in the telecommunications sector and has improved local participation in the international digital community.

Additionally, Huawei’s ICT Talent Development and Internship Plan seeks to develop practical skills and knowledge in the graduate student’s skills sector.

The CEO said that Huawei has signed an MOU with The University of The West Indies to launch the Jamaica ICT Talent Hub Initiative and the HUAWEI ICT Academy is expected to launch in the very near future.
