Dream Entertainment is perhaps the most successful entertainment company in Jamaica. So if you’re looking to start a party planning or event promotion business, you could definitely learn a thing or two from them.
Joining me now is Managing Director of Dream Entertainment, Scott Dunn.
Running a successful entertainment business requires equal parts passion and business acumen.
Managing Director of Dream Entertainment, Scott Dunn says that in order for entertainment businesses to survive and thrive in an overly competitive market, companies must have a team in place that is ready to do the work.
“From day one we looked at it as a business and we tried to bring in people who were business-minded and who were serious about business,” he said.
Speaking on MoneyMovesJa with Kalilah Reynolds, Dunn explained that his team at Dream includes professionals with University degrees in project management, marketing and sales and information technology.
He said that based on his 28 years of experience in the entertainment industry, having a diverse, experienced and passionate team is necessary to scale a business.
Dream Entertainment has two flagship events; Dream Weekend and Exodus Carnival.
Dream Weekend is a 3-4 day long music festival featuring some of the biggest names in Reggae and Dancehall. Dunn said that Dream Weekend is getting ready to make its European debut in September with Dream Weekend Malta.
“The core of it is the focus on building, what we call, an event tourism brand. To build something for Jamaica, something that we can export globally but ultimately bring people to Jamaica to experience entertainment in Jamaica,” he said.
The Managing Director said that both Dream Weekend and Exodus Carnival attract a large international crowd and provide a major boost to the tourism industry.
“For Dream weekend in Negril, we’re looking at about 60% international and for Exodus, it’s about 70% international,” he said.
Dunn noted, however, that it takes time to get to where his brand is now and urged entrepreneurs to start small.
He said that it’s easy for a small entrepreneur to see large events and aspire to do that on the first go, however, it takes a lot of funding and experience in order to pull off a major event.
“Start small and be realistic about all your budgets and how many people you’re expecting,” he said.
He said that the entertainment industry can be risky and to be successful takes preparation and dedication.
